Yinlong Key Technology of ESS System Evaluated as “International Leading Level”

Recently, the scientific and technological achievements appraisal meeting on “R&D and Application of Key Technology of High-Safety and High-Rate Energy Storage System”, organized by the China Machinery Industry Federation, was held in Zhuhai. According to the appraisal committee, Yinlong 's project of "R&D and Application of Key Technology of High-Safety and High-Rate Energy Storage System" is of great technical difficulty and demonstrates significant level of innovation and the core technology has independent intellectual property rights. It has significant economic and social benefits for promoting the safe and reliable application of electric energy storage on a large scale and has already met the condition for popularization and application. The committee also declared that it has reached "international leading" level in the field of LTO electrochemical energy storage technology.

This project was carried out with a focus on the demand for high-safety, high-rate, and long-life energy storage system application. It broke through the technical limitation of lithium-ion battery, which cannot achieve high-rate charge and discharge and long cycle life at the same time. What's more, it solved the difficulty of cooling and temperature difference control of batteries under high-rate working condition. These achievements helped to build an advanced technological industrial chain by driving an overall development with key point technology and promoted a high quality-development of domestic energy storage technology, and secured a leading position in energy storage industry for our country.

“One is high safety, the other is high rate, this project has made a lot of innovations, and I applaud it as a scientific and technological achievement”, said Ouyang Minggao, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the project evaluation committee. Director Ma Jingkun from China Machinery Industry Federation said that this scientific and technological achievements appraisal meeting will be very meaningful, and the market will tell whether an achievement is good or bad, he also said that the user's recognition is the most important thing. For Yinlong Energy, the achievement appraisal is a process of carefully summarizing the whole course of preliminary research and development, and more importantly, a process of further improving the technology to better meet the needs of users.

“International leading” Energy Storage Technology Under “Double Carbon” Goal

To reach carbon emission peak by 2030 and carbon neutral by 2060. The introduction of these two carbon goals provides a clear roadmap for the development of the energy revolution and builds a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system. Energy storage, as a strategic emerging industry supporting the leap-forward development of new energy, plays a key role in its safe operation and healthy development to achieve the “double carbon” goal. Under the new economic situation, energy storage needs to be supported to build a new economic growth point and provide support for economic and social development.

As a new energy technology enterprise deeply engaged in the field of energy storage, Yinlong deeply understands that energy storage technology progress and innovation is the driving force to promote energy revolution and transformation, as well as the key driving force and inevitable choice to achieve the goal of “double carbon”. Yinlong R&D team developed innovations based on four aspects of the energy storage technology, being material, cell, module, and system. These key innovations include mesoporous microspheres LTO material spontaneous crystallization construction technology, full coverage pole plate self-constraint battery technology, high-rate energy storage system thermal management technology, and real-time safety diagnosis strategy based on multi-time scale battery internal resistance estimation, which have been successfully applied in high-safety and high-rate LTO energy storage system.

In the past ten years, the energy storage industry has made great progress in terms of technology, application and commercial models. With the advancement of market-oriented reform of energy industry, the development of energy storage industry is still facing deep technical problems. Wu Mingshi, a professor at Sun Yat-sen University and a member of the project evaluation committee, believes that “Yinlong high-safety and high-rate energy storage system has reached a very high level, from material, battery, module to system.”  Zhang Xuewen, a professor at Xi 'an Jiaotong University and a member of the project evaluation committee, believes that LTO has significant advantages in energy storage, he said,“the most important thing is safety, and the then it’s life. After the “3060 goal” was proposed, our academic community is taking action. In order to achieve emission reduction, technological breakthroughs must be made first.”

Cao Yuancheng, a professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology and a member of the project evaluation committee, said after hearing the project report, “I was shocked. From the perspective of scientific research projects, Yinlong's project has done very well. I believe that the future development of Yinlong will be recognized by the market.” “There are very good opportunities for development,” said Zhang Lingzhi, a professor at the Guangzhou Energy Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a member of the project evaluation committee.

LTO Enables High Rate and Long Life at the Same Time

In 2020, the Global Renewable Energy Outlook published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) predicted that under the energy transition scenario, 73% of installed capacity and more than 60% of electricity generation would come from photovoltaic and wind power, global demand for stationary energy storage (excluding electric vehicles) will increase from around 30GWh today to 745GWh in 2030 and 9000GWh in 2050. New energy power generation is characterized by randomness, volatility, and intermittency, which intensifies the energy imbalance of the grid in a short period of time in the process of being connected to the grid. And the fact that the traditional power frequency modulation speed is slow makes it difficult for the grid to meet additional power demand. What poses a greater challenge to the stable operation of the grid and a stable power supply is that the load component variation cycle for system frequency modulation is second to minute level. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the flexible regulation ability of the system through energy storage innovation technology.

Yinlong high-safety and high-rate energy storage system adopts its self-developed mesoporous microspheres LTO material spontaneous crystallization construction technology and full coverage pole plate self-constraint cell design, which breaks through the technical limitation of lithium battery not being able to achieve high-rate charge and discharge and long cycle life at the same time. It can effectively smoothen output fluctuations, respond to dispatch command rapidly and accurately, which helps to improve electric power quality and grid stability, fully meet the short-time demand of power support for the power grid, extend the service life of the existing transmission and distribution equipment, and save the overall cost.

Mesoporous microspheres LTO material spontaneous crystallization construction technology enables LTO materials to assume a morphology of mesoporous void microsphere, the materials made from which has an outstanding rate performance and can be further used in high-rate working condition. The dual purpose of finalizing physical structure and modifying characteristics of material crystallization is realized, which is conducive to electrolyte penetration and retention, increases the transmission rate of lithium ion between crystal interface and electrolyte, lower internal resistance of battery and increase battery rate performance and power density.

The stability of the spacing between the positive and negative plates, the uniform distribution of current and temperature, and the smooth transmission channels of lithium ions and electrons are the three key aspects to achieve the performance goals of battery products. Yinlong full coverage multi-channel pole plate self-restraint battery technology was tested at the National Supervision and Inspection Center for Motor Vehicle Product Quality (Shanghai), in which it showed a cycle life of more than 16,000 times at 4C/4C (100%DOD) charge and discharge. It has overcome the compatibility problem of high rate and heat dissipation, high current output and electrolyte flow, In this way, it can meet the application needs of power energy storage with high rate and long life.

LTO Enables High Safety and High Rate at the Same Time

National Development and Reform Commission, the National Energy Administration issued the “Guidance on the Implementation of the “Integration Of Wind, Photovoltaic, Water And Thermal Energy Storage” and “Integration Of Energy Source, Grid, Load and Storage” (draft)”, which pointed out that within the overall requirements of energy transformation and upgrading and the framework of the basic principles of “low-carbon and clean, safe and efficient”, the overall requirement of the “two integration “ is to first and foremost secure the bottom line of safety and promote energy transformation and green development on the premise of ensuring the safe and stable operation of the power system. Yu Yuehai, deputy chief engineer of National Grid Electric Power Research Institute and member of project evaluation committee, said that electric vehicle accidents have put forward higher requirements for safety, “safety is a technical challenge, we should use technical means to solve this problem.”

As a socially responsible enterprise, Yinlong deeply understand the importance of safety. The high-safety and high-rate ESS assessed as “international leading” level this time not only adopts the Yinlong LTO material known as “zero strain material”, which almost experiences no structural change in the process of charging and discharging and guarantees high-safety performance of ESS system from material structure, it also has innovatively developed two major safety technologies, namely, the key technology of thermal management of high-rate energy storage system and the real-time safety diagnosis strategy based on multi-time scale battery internal resistance estimation.

As is known to all, the use condition of lithium-ion battery has a great influence on its heat generation, and the battery accumulates more heat within a short period of time the bigger the charge and discharge rate is. According to the test, under 4P working condition, the maximum temperature difference of the battery in the module that adopted the project technology does not exceed 2℃, which solves the problem of battery heat dissipation and temperature difference control under high rate working condition, effectively solves the problems such as the aggravation of temperature rise and the difficulty of rapid heat dissipation in the process of charging and discharging at high rate of energy storage system, and ensures the long-term reliable operation of the battery system.

In the field of large-scale energy storage applications, in order to meet the demand of current, voltage, power, energy, serial connection and parallel connection are often used to form battery modules or battery packs by connecting a large number of single cells. This process greatly increases the complexity of the system, which resulted in higher failure rate. Yinlong high-safety and high-rate energy storage system can effectively avoid major safety hazard resulted from unexpected battery failure at high-rate working charge and discharge conditions. Professor Cao Yuancheng was excited in saying that “Yinlong LTO energy storage system is relatively safe. For the public, this means we have found a technology that can solve the safety problem, which is the most important thing. The 14th Five-Year Plan is set as the key period and window period for carbon emission to peak. Energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP will be cut by 13.5% and 18%, respectively, which have been included in the main targets for economic and social development during this period. As a major energy producer and consumer in the world, fossil energy will account for about 25% of China's primary energy consumption by 2030, and the total installed capacity of wind and solar power will reach more than 1.2 billion kilowatts. It must be supported by breakthroughs and innovations in revolutionary and advanced technologies, and accelerate the promotion and application of mature and reliable energy storage technologies.
